About Suburban Tennis League

The Suburban Tennis League is an adult tennis league serving the Boston, MA metropolitan area. This is one of the oldest tennis leagues in the area, dating back to before 1920!. Men's play is doubles only, with three doubles teams per team. Play occurs in the months of May and June with three divisions, A, B, and C. The A division is very strong, with many of the best players, including pros, in the Boston area participating. As a guideline (although not enforced as in USTA leagues), A level would be 4.5 and up rated players, B level is approximately 4.0 level players, and C level is approximately 3.5 level players. To be competitive in the A level, the first team should be very strong, as they will be up against some of the top players in the Boston area.

With a full complement of teams, there are two sections, north and south, with each level. The B level in recent years has had enough teams for three sections (south, central and west). A full complement for a section is eight teams. At the end of the regular season (seven matches), there is a playoff between the winner of each section of that division. In recent years, there have only been eight A teams, so there has been only one A section.

There are playoffs to determine the winner of the division. There are at least two rounds of playoffs with the B division having three rounds in recent years.

In contrast to the rules for USTA leagues, there is no time limit to play and regular scoring is used (i.e. ad scoring and best two of three sets wins). This is an outdoor league, and matches are played outside except possibly when there is inclement weather.
